Yale Researchers Offer Help for Teens Being Bullied on Facebook

Don’t like a post on Facebook? Wish you weren’t tagged making that face? Being cyber-bullied?

Yale research scientist Marc Brackett is here to help.

Brackett, 43, a child psychologist who was bullied himself in middle school, is helping Facebook develop better tools for young teens to use to flag problematic posts, deal with conflicts and navigate the sometimes treacherous waters of social networking.

“We’ve created a system to help them more easily to report their experience, feel comfortable about reporting it, express their feelings and make suggestions about the best way to manage it,” Brackett said.

“They are learning how to communicate with that person so they can problem-solve instead of just dismissing them,” Brackett said.

In developing the new system, the team came up with adolescent-friendly language and descriptions tailored to the 13- to 14-year-old age group. The structure is based on the concept of emotional intelligence -- the ability to recognize, understand, label, express and regulate emotions.

Connecticut Innovations Makes $500,000 Follow-on Investment in Innovatient Solutions Inc.

 

 

 

Rocky Hill, Conn., April 16, 2012 – Connecticut Innovations (CI), the state’s quasi-public authority responsible for technology-based innovation and economic development, today announced that it has made a follow-on investment of $500,000 in Innovatient Solutions Inc. (Innovatient) of Farmington, Conn., through its Seed Investment Fund. This investment is part of a Series A extension round of $2 million, led by CI and involving company founders and angel investors. In 2011, CI made its first investment of $500,000 in Innovatient under the first part of the Series A round.

Innovatient is developing a patient-centered information system aimed at improving communications between hospital care providers and patients in order to enhance clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.

“It is highly encouraging that Innovatient’s tool addresses a sizeable and growing market that is being favorably affected by federal mandates on healthcare institutions,” said Claire Leonardi, chief executive officer and executive director of CI. “Our continued support of Innovatient will enable the company to address a portion of this market while supporting Governor Malloy’s goal of promoting innovation in the state.”...................

Connecticut's VC program as a guide for Wisconsin

Connecticut launched the nation’s first state-leveraged venture capital program 35 years ago. Today, more than 30 states have similar funds, including many of Wisconsin’s neighbors and peers.

The story of Connecticut’s success in building its supply of venture capital is among the reasons why Wisconsin should also embrace a bipartisan approach to developing sources of capital for its high-growth, early stage companies.

Connecticut has nearly 3.6 million people versus Wisconsin’s 5.7 million, but it routinely outperforms Wisconsin when it comes to landing its proportional share of venture capital. Since roughly the time Connecticut created the “Connecticut Product Development Corp.” to leverage private investments, about $6.6 billion has been invested in 502 in-state companies. Microsoftonline mystery

Disappearing data (specifically: categories set in outlook contacts), just * poof cleared away... Anyone have an issue with data that gets altered on it?

The price was right to go in the cloud, but we are loosing control of our data - yesteryear, we could have fairly easily done a restore from our backups... now *poof... lost forevermore.

What does this mean for other types of data that are irretrievable?

Connecticut is 8th Nationally in Patents Issues

Connecticut ranks 8th with 102.8 patents per 100,000 workers.  Which is -2.7% over the last 5 years -2009 vs. 2004.

SSTI has prepared a table of U.S patents issued per 100,000 employees by state between FY 2004-2009. The table also includes rankings for each year and the percentage change over the entire five-year period. Overall U.S. patenting per 100,000 employees increased 8.4 percent last year, and 2.4 percent between 2004 and 2009. The data reveals few geographic trends, though the three states with the greatest decrease in patenting activity per employee over the five year period were in the U.S. Mountain region. Idaho, South Dakota and Montana experienced the largest percentage declines, though South Dakota and Montana’s generally low patenting rates render the losses less remarkable.

Washington (State) and Vermont top the list in Patents Issue per 100,000 workers.
