Connecticut Innovations Makes Follow-On Investment in Sustainable Real Estate Solutions Inc.

Company’s platform enables users to assess, benchmark and monitor energy performance of buildings and identify retrofit opportunities

Rocky Hill, Conn., June 30, 2011 – Connecticut Innovations (CI), the state’s quasi-public authority responsible for technology investing and innovation development, today announced that it has made a $400,000 follow-on investment in Sustainable Real Estate Solutions Inc. (SRS) of Trumbull, Conn., through its Connecticut Clean Tech Fund. This investment is part of a $1 million investment round also involving LaunchCapital, Advantage Capital Connecticut and individual investors. 

SRS’s software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform, Sustainable Real Estate Manager^®, provides a comprehensive set of energy and sustainability performance assessment, benchmarking and monitoring solutions for the commercial real estate industry. The web-based platform enables building management professionals, real estate investors, lenders, tenants and consultants to proactively assess and manage energy efficiency and sustainability-related risks and opportunities to ensure optimal performance at both the individual property and portfolio levels. 

The Sustainable Real Estate Manager^® platform is the industry’s first integrated solution for measuring and monitoring commercial real estate energy and sustainability performance against several existing and emerging public and private benchmarks.

Northeast Electrochemical Energy Storage Cluster will hold a Supply Chain Exchange Event

On July 20, 2011, the Northeast Electrochemical Energy Storage Cluster (NEESC) will host a Supply Chain Exchange for the hydrogen and fuel cell industry supply chain in the New England and New York region. The 2011 Exchange, to be held in Westborough, MA, will draw hydrogen and fuel cell original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), component and materials suppliers, service providers, business leaders and energy professionals from across the region and present them with opportunities for enhanced business development.

The NEESC event will integrate commerce and energy to foster high-value relationships among a wide range of component, product and service suppliers throughout the Northeast region. It will also feature a dynamic matchmaking/networking session for OEMs to connect with potential suppliers, such as UTC Power, General Motors (GM), Proton Onsite, FuelCell Energy, Acumentrics, and others.

"This is a terrific business opportunity for supply chain companies in the region to meet with OEMs, state funders, and government program managers," stated Joel M. Rinebold, Director of Energy Initiatives at CCAT.

NEESC is administered by the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. (CCAT), with the Massachusetts Hydrogen Coalition, New Energy New York, Clean Energy States Alliance, and the Hydrogen Energy Center to improve the competitive position of hydrogen and fuel cell cluster businesses in the Northeast. This event is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to expand the commercialization of hydrogen-fuel cell technology and products. CNBC Business Rankings Downgrade Connecticut

CNBC’s “America’s Top States for Business 2011” ranked Connecticut at #39 – down from #35 last year. This change can be largely attributed to a decrease in “Business Friendliness”, hinting that some may see Connecticut regulations as too constricting. Also, the overall “Economy” ranking took a significant hit since the 2010 report. With these scores on top of the consistently low scoring "Cost of Doing Business" category, Connecticut was not portrayed as a strong state for business in this round of rankings.

But, it is not all bad news. Connecticut's education system is ranked #3 in the country, and is backed by well ranked “Quality of Life”, “Access to Capital”, and “Technology & Innovation” categories. Opinions differ on what should be done to bolster the Connecticut economy, but it is hard to argue against a well-educated base of students and a strong field for innovation.

Rick Green of the Hartford Courant reported that “Connecticut is outpacing much of the rest of the nation in economic growth,” with GDP growth at 3.1%. This makes Connecticut the economy with the 12^th highest growth when compared to other states - a promising figure as the state bounces back from the recession.

PASSUR Aerospace Announces $2.9 Million Contract Extension with the FAA

UConn's growing incubator space aims to yield breakthroughs, jobs

Less than a year after opening its doors, the University of Connecticut’s Cell and Genome Sciences Building in Farmington has filled its 4,500 square feet of incubator space.

With about eight companies now operating in the 117,000 square foot state-of-the-art research facility — and more knocking on the door — it’s a sign, school officials say, that the region can become a hub for bioscience, luring tech startups and entrepreneurs who want to collaborate with researchers at the UConn Health Center...

Matthew Nemerson, president and CEO of the Connecticut Technology Council, said every region in the country — other than Boston, Silicon Valley, and San Diego — is trying to figure out how to create the right mix of academic, venture capital and entrepreneurs to create a vibrant bioscience corridor.

Nemerson said Connecticut has strong building blocks, which will be bolstered by the UConn Health Center project, but to create a critical mass the state will have to attract more top researchers and entrepreneurs.

The venture funding typically follows after that. “It’s not just enough for us to be a player in New England,” Nemerson said. “You have to be a player globally to attract capital.”

Global Consultant Returns to Connecticut to Report on Strength of State's Global Economic Network

Michael Gallis to speak at conference on investments and trends in healthcare, software and energy on June 22 at Yale Law School

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Twelve years ago global strategic consultant Michael Gallis shocked state leaders with predictions that the lack of transportation investments meant the Hudson River would soon cut Connecticut off from economic growth on the U.S. “mainland.” Gallis’ epic Strategic Framework of 1999 predicted that a lack of urban critical mass would stifle real estate and business growth and that state educational priorities were drifting away from technology skills to more general pursuits. “Reform your ways or the global economic networks will gradually disappear from the state,” he cautioned. On June 22 at the Yale Law School, Gallis returns to give a report card on the state’s performance in fixing these areas and to provide an update on how the world situation has changed, requiring new strategies for the state government and business.

“Venture investors read Gallis’ work to understand the drivers for rapid growth or regional decline. Gallis sets the standard for enlightened planning, so we are excited to have him at the kick-off event for our four-part “Crossroad 2011 Series,” said Connecticut Venture Group Executive Director Liddy Karter.

The conference, entitled “Crossroads of Ideas and Capital: Vision 2015 in Healthcare, Software and Energy” will be held at the Law School of Yale University in New Haven Wednesday, June 22, from 3 -7 PM.

The business community – investors, corporate managers, and entrepreneurs - will hear how risk capital experts in the verticals of healthcare, software and energy view short and longer-term investment opportunities. CEOs of top growth firms’ top venture investors based in Connecticut will discuss the opportunities they see in state and elsewhere.

Gallis will reference the 1999 report to examine how the U.S., the Northeast and Connecticut have changed and prepared for the future. His report, The Connecticut Strategic Economic Framework led to the creation of the statewide Transportation Strategy Board and indirectly to $3.2 Billion allocated by the state for transportation plans.

Three prominent strategic thinkers: Fairfield Country Business Council CEO Chris Bruhl, Connecticut Technology Council Chairman Chris Kalish, and United Technologies Research Center Executive Director David Parekh will share their views of how the state has and can respond to Gallis’ recommendations. DECD Commissioner Catherine Smith will then square their vision with the new administration’s growth strategies.

DomaniCom Corporation Receives Pre-Seed Financing

Experienced team leads company developing game-changing technologies for convergence of multimedia and communications services

Rocky Hill, Conn., June 9, 2011 – Connecticut Innovations (CI), the state’s quasi-public authority responsible for technology investing and innovation development, today announced that it has committed $150,000 in financing to DomaniCom Corporation, a systems and software company based out of Shelton, Conn., through its Pre-Seed Fund. The company has secured matching funds, as required under the program, from several investors. This is the eleventh financing deal through the Pre-Seed Fund. 

“DomaniCom is excited to be working with Connecticut Innovations,” commented Arun Sengupta, vice president of operations for DomaniCom Corporation. “With so much technical talent available in Connecticut, CI’s funding will enable us to continue the development of our solution while entering a growing market.” 

DomaniCom is developing game-changing technologies and a platform that will integrate linear television, IP-TV and non-video services (e.g. managed WiFi, electric meter reading, surveillance, etc.) under one management system.

Microsoftonline mystery

Disappearing data (specifically: categories set in outlook contacts), just * poof cleared away... Anyone have an issue with data that gets altered on it?

The price was right to go in the cloud, but we are loosing control of our data - yesteryear, we could have fairly easily done a restore from our backups... now *poof... lost forevermore.

What does this mean for other types of data that are irretrievable?
