Chondrogenics Inc. was formed in 2010 to commercialize the stem cell therapy developed in the lab of Dr. Caroline Dealy, Associate Professor in the Center for Regenerative Medicine and Skeletal Development at the University of Connecticut Health Center, for the treatment of osteoarthritis and the repair of damaged cartilage associated with diseased and damaged joints. Dr. Dealy and her colleagues have developed a novel process for producing substantially homogeneous populations of chondrogenic cells and earlier progenitor cells from stem cells, including induced human embryonic and pluripotent stem cells. In 2011, the Connecticut Stem Cell Research Initiative awarded $1.29 million to Chondrogenics to fund its ongoing preclinical testing using chondrogenic cells derived from human embryonic stem cells to repair joint cartilage damaged by injury or aging . This is the first preclinical trial of a stem cell-derived therapy funded by the State of Connecticut Stem Cell Initiative.
